Pipeline: Future Professionals

From Library Success: A Best Practices Wiki
Jump to: navigation, search

How are we presenting our profession to potential successors? There are lots of efforts going on, some more organized (better funded?) than others. Are we targeting an increase in diversity to reflect society, or are we simply creating a future in our own image? Please list and describe activities, actions, projects, perspectives.

Programs that promote diversity in the profession:

College of St. Catherine, Urban Library Program, St. Paul, Minnesota. A paraprofessional 10-month certification program that awards 12 undergraduate credits. Collaboration between St. Kate's and the St. Paul Public Library. The program includes practicum rotations at St. Paul Public Library sites. This program walks the walk (and I don't say that just because I'm an MLIS graduate student at St. Kate's); it recognizes the challenges that ULP students have and attempts to provide real support.
