= Tips for Training Library Staff =

Tips for Floating Librarians

Many library systems employ floaters- people who
do not work at a specific location, but "float" around from library to
library and fill in for a short-handed staff. This
is especially true as more and more workers take advantage of the Family
and Medical Leave Act of 1993
[1]. Listed below are a few tips for current floaters or
would-be floaters interested in some of the challenges of the position:

Make
sure your transportation is safe
and reliable. It may
be possible that some floaters must supply their own transportation
from location to location. Inquire with your employer if it
is possible to take a company vehicle when on location if the need to
travel arrives, and mark your mileage for possible compensation.

If
floating a position that has contacts with patrons,
never assume a patron knows
what they want to find, or that you know what they want! [2]
Ask them questions to dig out the answer.

Become
very familiar with the procedures of your institution, as these will
act as a guide for you to follow at the various locations you may be
visiting [2]. Also, make personal notes of any idiosyncrasies
from location to location, and try to respect them. After
all, you're a guest worker!

Don't
get involved with work politics. You will have to work with a
wide range of people, and its best not to burn bridges.

Being
a floater is a continual learning experience [3]. Keep your
mind open and be prepared to learn throughout your time as a floater.

Become
familiar with the physical locations of where you work (the stacks,
bathrooms, and important building nearby, such as post offices).

Have
fun!

*[http://www.brandonu.ca/Library/COPPUL/ ANTS: ANimated Tutorial Sharing project by COPPUL ] This project was designed to enable librarians to share in the development of point-of-need animated tutorials for a multitude of e-products. The project makes use of new Collaborative Information Technology (CIT) via an Open Source Institutional Repository (DSpace), a Wiki, RSS Feeds and Web Pages. This enables participants to (1) identify tutorials for development and (2) keep others up to date on their work. Initially only COPPUL librarians could add content to the Repository; but as of October 2006, any librarian can add content as well as download open source tutorials. It should also be noted that as its list of e-resources for tutorial development is on a Wiki, the list is considered to be a starting point for development. Anyone can add new e-products to the list of tutorials for development. Similarly, other types of library tutorials are welcome. One need only indicate that it exsists on the wiki and ensure that the source code for the tutorial is uploaded into DSpace.

= Introduction =

Welcome to Library Success: A Best Practices Wiki. This wiki was created to be a one-stop shop for great ideas and information for all types of librarians. All over the world, librarians are developing successful programs and doing innovative things with technology that no one outside of their library knows about. There are lots of great blogs out there sharing information about the profession, but there is no one place where all of this information is collected and organized. That's what we're trying to do.

If you've done something at your library that you consider a success, please [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Editing write about it in the wiki] or provide a link to outside coverage. If you have materials that would be helpful to other librarians, add them to the wiki. And if you know of a librarian or a library that is doing something great, feel free to include information or links to it. Basically, if you know of anything that might be useful to other librarians (including useful websites), this is the place to put it. I hope this wiki will be a venue where people can share ideas with one another and where librarians can learn to replicate the successes of other libraries.

Please familiarize yourself with the license before using any of the content on your own site.

'''Anyone''' who wants to add to or edit topics on the wiki can do it. You don't need to ask before making a change -- this wiki belongs to the community of librarians who use it. = Categories =
Check out the [[Categories|alphabetized list of categories]] with alphabetized lists of articles in each category.

If you add a new category, please add it to this list on the main page so people can easily find it. You can also add new pages off of the pages in each category (subpages). For example, if you want to go into depth with a "success story" about gaming, you can create another page for the details on the success story and just put a little teaser or title on the gaming page (with a link).

''You can easily add a new page by putting the title of the new page inside double brackets on the front page (you can see the formatting when you go to edit this page). Then, when you click on that link, you will be taken to a new page that you can add to.''

Dr. Gail Dickison wrote in Library Media Connection,April/May2005, "Weeding is a professional responsibility. It was what librarians in all types of libraries do." Dr. Dickinson suggest taking fifteen minute every week and try one shelf a wekk approach. The three steps she suggests are:

Step One: Start with one shelf and pull out the books on that shelf and just do a visual check. Using a quick glance, are there any books that look as if they need to be weeded?

Step Two: Once you have a pile of suspect books, apply the rules of deselection and make the decision to toss or keep.

Step Three: Take the books you have chosen to pull from the collection to a workstation. At this point, you complete the steps to remove a book from your collection and the author suggests tossing the book in the trashcan.

Dr. Dickinson suggest this method of weeding should take about fifteen minutes and over time will become a quick and efficient method of weeding. By keeping track of what you have weeded, eventually you will make it around your library. "Weeding, when viewed as a normal part of library center routine, does not involve shirt sleeves, hot summer days, or brown paper bags surrepitiously stored in the trunk of the library media specialist's car. Plan to start your 15 Minutes-To-A-Better-Collection exercise routine today."

Time management in any educational setting is crucial to success. This is a great solution to a daunting task that must be done to any collection. By taking this simple approach to weeding and making it a part of your weekly routine, it will not become an overwhelming task and it will also help you become more familiar with your collection, one shelf at a time.
The St. Charles Library (IL) has discovered a great community marketing tool - synchronized book cart pushing. The Bookettes are extremely popular at all local parades, and have even been invited by the students to participate in the high school homecoming parades. It is a great way to develop a following AND keep the library at the forefront of the community. Tips: 1) organize early and keep the routine simple the first year; 2) have fun! 3) call the press and invite them to a practice, then get your photo on the front page of the newspaper; 3) create a theme, wear the same color shirts and/or decorate the carts; 4) make sure your wheels are on tight.
