"Work Like A Patron" Day is a day dedicated to making library staff more aware of what patrons experience when using the library. On this day, library staff are encouraged to "work like a patron" as possible. This includes:
*entering and leaving the library through the public entrance (not the staff doors)
*using the public computers to do your work
*using only the patron interface for searching your catalog
*using the library website to locate information
*using the public printers and photocopiers
*calling the main number and navigating the phone system
*using the public restrooms
*reserving public meeting rooms for meetings
*reading posted signs to see if they're helpful
*sitting in the chairs/use the furniture meant for the public
*paying your library fines (no waiving them the day before!)
*returning your items in the book drop
*following all library policies
By experiencing the library from the point of view of our patrons, staff can hopefully both improve the services we offer as well as empathize with patron needs and expectations.
Vendors and Publishers
Evolving content delivery for mobile learners
On 7th March 2011 the Open Unversity Library Services hosted a workshop for publishers and librarians to discuss the problems of finding and accessing the content needed for mobile learners from the Library perspective. This was a follow up to a workshop held in May 2010 at University of Westminster at which senior members of the UK HE Library Community discussed the difficulty of supplying content to an increasingly mobile student body. The major issue identified through that discussion was the lack of appropriate mobile-friendly academic content to meet learners’ needs.

All the materials from the event can be found on SlideShare.

These include all the presentations, programme, list of attendees and two short reports. One is a quick summary of the event as a whole and the second is a synthesis of the discussion from the workshop sessions with specific recommendations and suggested next steps.

*printing using the public printers
*using the public restrooms
*reserving public meeting rooms for meetings
*sitting in the chairs/use the furniture meant for the public
*paying your library fines (no waiving them the day before!)
*following all library policies

By experiencing the library from the point of view of our patrons, staff can hopefully both improve the services we offer as well as empathize with patron needs and expectations.

History and Future Days
October 15th, 2008, was chosen to be the first "Work Like A Patron" Day. This date is 6 months after Library Appreciation Week (in 2008, April 13-18th). Future WLAP days will always be on the Wednesday of the week 6 months after Library Appreciation Month.
Introduction
Welcome to Library Success: A Best Practices Wiki. This wiki was created to be a one-stop shop for great ideas and information for all types of librarians. All over the world, librarians are developing successful programs and doing innovative things with technology that no one outside of their library knows about. There are lots of great blogs out there sharing information about the profession, but there is no one place where all of this information is collected and organized. That's what we're trying to do.

If you've done something at your library that you consider a success, please write about it in the wiki or provide a link to outside coverage. If you have materials that would be helpful to other librarians, add them to the wiki. And if you know of a librarian or a library that is doing something great, feel free to include information or links to it. Basically, if you know of anything that might be useful to other librarians (including useful websites), this is the place to put it. I hope this wiki will be a venue where people can share ideas with one another and where librarians can learn to replicate the successes of other libraries.

Anyone who wants to add to or edit topics on the wiki can do it. You don't need to ask before making a change -- this wiki belongs to the community of librarians who use it. If you have any technical questions about the wiki, please contact its creator, Meredith Farkas. Questions about specific content in the wiki should be directed to that individual author.
When you register for this wiki, you can then add to your own user profile page. Please add your profile to the Wiki User List so we can all get to know each other!
Note: If you are going to add to the list of recommended vendors or software, please put your name on your recommendation so we know that it's not from a vendor. From here on in, we will have to delete any new vendor/software recommendations that do not have the author identified.
Categories
Check out the alphabetized list of categories with alphabetized lists of articles in each category.
If you add a new category, please add it to this list on the main page so people can easily find it. You can also add new pages off of the pages in each category (subpages). For example, if you want to go into depth with a "success story" about gaming, you can create another page for the details on the success story and just put a little teaser or title on the gaming page (with a link).

You can easily add a new page by putting the title of the new page inside double brackets on the front page (you can see the formatting when you go to edit this page). Then, when you click on that link, you will be taken to a new page that you can add to.

Hi. I arranged this list in alpha (you can take the librarian out of the library...). Hope this doesn't upset anyone. I added my handle rather than my real name, because I would have been first ;\ Walkingpaper 23:34, 9 Jul 2005 (EDT)
One more thing. It was late Saturday night when I did this, so I didn't consider that this list might benefit from being Last, First when more people add their names. --Walkingpaper 12:19, 11 Jul 2005 (EDT)
I kind of like it alphabetized by first name, actually. It's more "friendly" (rather than being like a school roster). --Meredith 2:23, 11 July 2005 (EDT)
Now that I've finally stumbled into wiki land I see no one has been here in years - did I miss the bus? Charlotte

If you did, I did too. But this is now April 2008, and I'll be very surprised if anyone answers. Here's a question, anyway: I've heard that there is a way to calculate the monetary value of shelf space in your library (someone mentioned that she heard this at a conference). I've been looking at the literature, and I'm not finding anything about this. I'm interested because I'd like to make a dollars and cents argument for weeding out the old stuff. Anyone have any ideas on this? - Janet

I haven't heard of this exactly, but I do like the idea. When it comes to monetary-izing library stuff, I always think of the Library Value Calculator (and here) - not exactly the same thing, but it does put a "price" on books. You could then translate that into shelf space. For weeding purposes, though, it seems like putting a price on shelf space would require not only calculating how much storing books cost, but calculating what else that space could be used for.--herzogbr 1:58, 23 Apr 2008

There isn't one media specialists that doesn't find the job of weeding their selection daunting. I recently found an article on weeding that has a quick and easy way to weed your collection.

Dr. Gail Dickison wrote in Library Media Connection,April/May2005, "Weeding is a professional responsibility. It was what librarians in all types of libraries do." Dr. Dickinson suggest taking fifteen minute every week and try one shelf a wekk approach. The three steps she suggests are:

Step One: Start with one shelf and pull out the books on that shelf and just do a visual check. Using a quick glance, are there any books that look as if they need to be weeded?

Step Two: Once you have a pile of suspect books, apply the rules of deselection and make the decision to toss or keep.

Step Three: Take the books you have chosen to pull from the collection to a workstation. At this point, you complete the steps to remove a book from your collection and the author suggests tossing the book in the trashcan.

Dr. Dickinson suggest this method of weeding should take about fifteen minutes and over time will become a quick and efficient method of weeding. By keeping track of what you have weeded, eventually you will make it around your library. "Weeding, when viewed as a normal part of library center routine, does not involve shirt sleeves, hot summer days, or brown paper bags surrepitiously stored in the trunk of the library media specialist's car. Time management in any educational setting is crucial to success. This is a great solution to a daunting task that must be done to any collection. By taking this simple approach to weeding and making it a part of your weekly routine, it will not become an overwhelming task and it will also help you become more familiar with your collection, one shelf at a time.

Plan to start your 15 Minutes-To-A-Better-Collection exercise routine today."
