There isn't one media specialists that doesn't find the job of weeding their selection daunting. I recently found an article on weeding that has a quick and easy way to weed your collection.

Dr. Gail Dickison wrote in Library Media Connection,April/May2005, "Weeding is a professional responsibility. It was what librarians in all types of libraries do." Dr. Dickinson suggest taking fifteen minute every week and try one shelf a week approach. The three steps she suggests are:

Step One: Start with one shelf and pull out the books on that shelf and just do a visual check. Using a quick glance, are there any books that look as if they need to be weeded?

Step Two: Once you have a pile of suspect books, apply the rules of deselection and make the decision to toss or keep.

Step Three: Take the books you have chosen to pull from the collection to a workstation. At this point, you complete the steps to remove a book from your collection and the author suggests tossing the book in the trashcan.

Dr. Dickinson suggest this method of weeding should take about fifteen minutes and over time will become a quick and efficient method of weeding. By keeping track of what you have weeded, eventually you will make it around your library. "Weeding, when viewed as a normal part of library center routine, does not involve shirt sleeves, hot summer days, or brown paper bags surrepitiously stored in the trunk of the library media specialist's car. Plan to start your 15 Minutes-To-A-Better-Collection exercise routine today."

Time management in any educational setting is crucial to success. This is a great solution to a daunting task that must be done to any collection. By taking this simple approach to weeding and making it a part of your weekly routine, it will not become an overwhelming task and it will also help you become more familiar with your collection, one shelf at a time.

= Ideas for Disposing of Weeded Books and/or Used Books =

*Throw Them Away. It's okay, really. It's hard, but sometimes, there's a reason ''why'' a book hasn't circulated in 5 or 10 years, or why it didn't sell at the book sale. Please consider recycling your old, outdated, damaged or otherwise unwanted books as a viable option. The resources listed below are outlets for quality books ''only'', not dumping grounds.
*Book sale (on-going in the library or annual Friends of the Library sale)
**Have a "$1 per bag" sale for the last day or few hours of the sale - as many books someone can fit into their bag (or box) for $1
**Set out leftover books in "Free" boxes after the sale
*Donate books to:
**[http://www.gotbooks.com GotBooks.com]
**[http://booksforsoldiers.com Books for Soldiers]
**Goodwill or Salvation Army stores (contacting the store first might be a good idea)
**Furniture stores and restaurants are sometimes interested in books, as they use them as props in their displays
**Jails and prisons often take books, but often will only take certain kinds
**Nursing homes or group homes (particularly useful for getting rid of old Large Print materials)
*Distribute books through:
**[http://www.freecycle.org FreeCycle.og]

Cdrocan: please help

I created this page to better organize the list of libraries that use IM reference. It is quite a long list and seems to be growing.
[[User:Crios|Crios]]

Nice work! I'm glad someone took the initiative to better organize it. I wish I'd had the time to do it myself. [[User:Meredith|Meredith]] 15:04, 3 December 2006 (EST)

* For Southern Illinois State University (Illinois), they use something called Morris Messenger. It sounds like this might be a browser based chat service. Can anybody confirm this? Should it be included in IM ref? [[User:Crios|Crios]]
**It looks like their library is called Morris and they are just using IM. [[User:Meredith|Meredith]] 08:59, 4 December 2006 (EST)
***I called them and I was told that it was browser based chat (like questionpoint). Should this be included in IM Reference? Byt the way... how do you get the date and time after your edit? Do you just type it in or is there somekind of code that you can use? [[User:Crios|Crios]]
****Hmmm... interesting... their site is deceptive then. To get your signature and date stamp, just enter four tildes (<nowiki>~~~~</nowiki>). [[User:Meredith|Meredith]] 16:54, 4 December 2006 (EST)

Is it really necesary to include the IM client that the libraries are using in house? I don't think it really matters which app they are using, just which IM service. [[User:Crios|Chris]] 10:15, 31 January 2007 (EST)

It's not strictly necessary to enter it, though I certainly wouldn't get rid of the information that's already on the wiki. I think it's useful for people to see what clients other libraries are using when they're making their own decisions in implementing an IM reference service. [[User:Meredith|Meredith]] 11:21, 31 January 2007 (EST)

* I tried to format the page, but the content disappeared on me. I tried to roll back my edit but it's not working. Can a sysop bring this page back. I viewed an the version previous to my edit and tried to paste the content back but it's not saving the content. It might be a bug as the page is so long...--[[User:Cdrocan|Cdrocan]] 10:42, 14 October 2009 (EDT)

= Introduction =

Welcome to Library Success: A Best Practices Wiki. This wiki was created to be a one-stop shop for great ideas and information for all types of librarians. All over the world, librarians are developing successful programs and doing innovative things with technology that no one outside of their library knows about. There are lots of great blogs out there sharing information about the profession, but there is no one place where all of this information is collected and organized. That's what we're trying to do.

If you've done something at your library that you consider a success, please [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Editing write about it in the wiki] or provide a link to outside coverage. If you have materials that would be helpful to other librarians, add them to the wiki. And if you know of a librarian or a library that is doing something great, feel free to include information or links to it. Basically, if you know of anything that might be useful to other librarians (including useful websites), this is the place to put it. I hope this wiki will be a venue where people can share ideas with one another and where librarians can learn to replicate the successes of other libraries.

Please familiarize yourself with the license before using any of the content on your own site.

'''Anyone''' who wants to add to or edit topics on the wiki can do it. You don't need to ask before making a change -- this wiki belongs to the community of librarians who use it. If you have any technical questions about the wiki, please contact its creator, [http://meredith.wolfwater.com/wordpress/looking-for-me/ Meredith Farkas]. Questions about specific content in the wiki should be directed to that individual author.

If you are going to link to this wiki, please use the following URL:

= Join the Community =

Just create an account to start adding and editing content on the wiki. Please enter your e-mail address when you create an account and you will be sent a link to confirm your address (after which you will be able to edit the wiki).

When you register for this wiki, you can then add to your own user profile page. Please add your profile to the [[Wiki User List]] so we can all get to know each other!

'''Note:''' If you are going to add to the list of recommended vendors or software, please put your name on your recommendation so we know that it's not from a vendor. From here on in, we will have to delete any '''new''' vendor/software recommendations that do not have the author identified.

If you want to see recent changes made to the wiki, visit [http://www.libsuccess.org/index.php?title=Special:Recentchanges Recent Changes]. There is also an [http://www.libsuccess.org/index.php?title=Special:Recentchanges&feed=rss RSS Feed] for the Recent Changes page...

= Categories =
Check out the [[Categories|alphabetized list of categories]] with alphabetized lists of articles in each category.

If you add a new category, please add it to this list on the main page so people can easily find it. You can also add new pages off of the pages in each category (subpages). For example, if you want to go into depth with a "success story" about gaming, you can create another page for the details on the success story and just put a little teaser or title on the gaming page (with a link).

''You can easily add a new page by putting the title of the new page inside double brackets on the front page (you can see the formatting when you go to edit this page). Then, when you click on that link, you will be taken to a new page that you can add to.''
<br><br>
Hood Rich by Crystal Perkins-Stell (Crystell Publications, $13.95)*<br>
When one doesn't understand the daily task of surviving in the ghetto, it's easy to criticize an inner city family for the things they value and their way of living. Hood Rich is a strong, fast paced, yet compassionate story about family, life choices, love, money, and growing up in the judicial system. You will immediately be drawn into this page turning drama, which totally immerses you into the ghetto lifestyle that inspires Prince to choose between loyalty and freedom. Looking at life through the eyes of a streetwise, DeMarques Prince, we are able to see why kingpins in his family were his biggest idols. Prince, an impressionable teenager in Detroit, Michigan takes us on an emotional adventure, recapping why at one time drugs, money, music, sex, and fashion defined his lifestyle. New experiences like love, death, and fatherhood test Prince's loyalty. In the end, he makes an ultimate sacrifice, which eventually teaches him about loving himself while striving to live a purpose driven life.
<br><br>
Hood Rat by K’wan (St. Martin’s Griffin, $14.95) (3)<br>
K'wan's latest (after Eve) is a meandering trip across Harlem with plenty of pit stops for vice and violence. Yoshi is a stripper who prostitutes herself for extra cash; Rhonda is a promiscuous and abusive mother of three; Reese is a scabrous, demanding kept woman; and Billy is an attractive, sporty woman with a healthy distrust of the men who live in their Harlem 'hood. All of the women get sucked into drama involving neighborhood rappers, drug dealings, abortion, fistfights, catfights, shootings, rape, AIDS or good, old-fashioned drunkenness. There's a bevy of minor characters, each involved in intersecting subplots, though these don't so much coalesce as run their course. The most interesting story involves Paul, a man who's trying to go straight and become an artist, and who's also dating a respectable lawyer named Marlene, but things are destined to end badly. None of the characters rises above stereotype and the plotting is mechanical, but the big draw here is the electric prose, which is imbued with profane, comic lyricism.
<br><br>
Deadly Reigns II by Teri Woods (Teri Woods Publishing, $14.95)*<br>
The Reigns family is like no other found in urban novels. Damian, Dante, Princess and Dajon didn't grow up deprived in the ghetto then turning to hustling as a means to survive. The Reigns children grew up with silver spoons in their mouths constantly able to afford the finer things in life. But what can be worse than Ivy League Criminals???? The Reigns family runs and empire that's controlling the drug trade throughout most of the U.S. And they run it with an iron grip!!! Deadly Reigns is truly an appropriate title for this family. The effort in which they go after their enemies including each other is shocking.
<br><br>
Keisha by Darrell DeBrew (Triple Crown Publications , $15)*<br>
Follow Keisha as she discovers that Clarence, the man she wanted to dedicate her life to, is responsible for the murders. As Keisha devises her plan for the most vicious payback, she meets resistance from DC s most successful and ruthless homicide detective, The Pinstriped Bitch, who pressures Keisha to give up the evidence against Clarence. As Keisha s thirst for vengeance escalates, she meets Jezebel, a high-priced call girl who teaches Keisha the art of seduction and makes her a brand new woman, helping her get the sweetest revenge possible. HELL HATH NO FURY LIKE A WOMAN SCORNED.

<br><br>
Bruised 2: The Ultimate Revenge by Azarel (Life Changing Books, $15) (7)<br>
Just when Carlie decides she s done with dangerous men, she s thrown right back into the fire by Kirk, her manipulative and deceitful new lover. Kaia has a combative relationship with her abusive mother, who stabbed her father to death and then forced four-year-old Kaia to lie to the police. Most of the story details her romance with Aaron, a drug dealer. While Kaia is in labor with their first child, Aaron is arrested for murder. He goes to prison while she raises their child and deals with a boyfriend who is behind bars. Kaia is a sympathetic character, and readers will identify with her struggles.
Written by a Federal prison inmate, this novel follows several young women who are trying to escape from poverty. It’s a difficult journey because they fall for men who are involved in drugs and crime. Angel, for example, is working her way through law school—by writing bad checks and fencing merchandise, unfortunately—and dating a violent pimp called Snake. Meanwhile, her friend Kyra is torn between two drug dealers. Graphic sex and plenty of drama make this novel a likely crowd pleaser. The sequel is Every Thug Needs A Lady, and a third book is said to be forthcoming.
"It’s the penthouse or the morgue." This is the philosophy adopted by Keshawn Wilson, a.k.a. ‘K-Dawg,’ self-proclaimed lord of the streets. Keshawn is the youngest of five kids and one of only two that doesn’t belong to his mother’s husband. As a little boy he feels the distance between he and his stepfather, and life becomes increasingly difficult for him as the years pass; his childhood and young adult years are spent in a home for boys and state prison, where he serves time for manslaughter. It is during his time behind bars, amongst hardened criminals, that the seeds of evil take root in his life and mercilessly transform him from an innocent child to a heartless, conniving menace, better known as ‘K-Dawg.’ K-Dawg decides that the world owes him something, and when he is released from prison he intends to take it. He comes up with the ultimate power move that is sure to put him on top of the game or under the earth. He wants it all, and he is dead set on having it—no matter what the cost. He has nothing to lose…and everything to gain.
This story of three young women who become strippers so they can survive on the streets is set in North Philadelphia. Seventeen-year-old Tonya’s mother beats her, and her stepfather gives her drugs and then rapes her. Kicked out of the house, Tonya is taken in by Kat and Goldie, who help her transform herself into Tender, a stripper and prostitute. All three women have sex with men for money, funding a lifestyle full of shopping, drugs, travel, and rivalries with other girls. The three women get mixed up with a pimp who tries to kill them, but they shoot him in self defense. Their bond begins to fall apart, however, when Kat betrays the other two. Unlike most of the other books on this list, the relationship among the three women—not their romances with men—is at the center of the novel.
A blistering follow-up to Turf War, Peanut’s Revenge opens with the release of criminal kingpin Big Ed Tatum from jail after the only witness to his crime is murdered. Is this his first task as a free man? To track down his rival Silky, who soon turns up dead. Silky’s woman, Melody Bordeaux (aka Peanut), vows revenge. But complications arise when Peanut’s adored little sister Crystal falls in love with Big Ed. Peanut follows Big Ed to his parents’ house where he stores his stash of drugs, money, and guns. Working on a parallel track are police team Johnson and Hernandez. As always, Jackson paints an unforgettable picture of the mean streets and lost souls of the urban underworld in his distinctive style. What makes this entry stand out from its predecessors is Jackson’s sizzling portrait of a female protagonist who will do whatever it takes to avenge the death of the man she loved.
Diamond Faith Sterling is an inner-city girl fashioned by her environment where crime, poverty and injustice abound and childhood dreams too often become dreams deferred. She has decided that, while society has denied her any chance to enter Heaven (to go to college, to become a professional), she will accept nothing less than ruling Hell (the inner-city and the streets of East Oakland). This one time street-corner drug-pusher transforms herself into a gritty queenpin: the ruthless leader of a multimillion-dollar narcotics syndicate as builds her empire piece by bloody piece. More and more, she desires to (in the parlance of the inner-city) flip her money into something genuine and she begins to focus on her childhood dreams of being somebody. Yet, to rise to Heaven, one must cut ties to Hell...and for this hard rock anti-heroine, giving up the empire she fought so hard to build proves to be the toughest, most gut-wrenching challenge of all...
After a painful and violent breakup with a drug dealer, a young woman turns to running an escort service and dealing drugs to support herself and her child. Christening herself Carmen, she learns the ropes and begins taking business from her ex boyfriend, but when her feelings for him return, she gets caught up in a deal gone bad. Like many of the other novels on this list, Carmen’s life of crime allows her to live well, with fancy hotel rooms and expensive champagne, but it all catches up with her at the end. This first-person novel tells the story of Mona, a smart and beautiful young woman from the housing projects in Wilmington, Delaware. Her mother is addicted to crack cocaine, and Mona grows up as a “ghetto queen,” stealing clothes and jewelry with her all-female gang. Determined to escape, she dates only men with money. On a trip to Philadelphia, she meets a drug trafficker named Cam. Their romance blooms when he gives her money and takes her on a trip to Jamaica. Mona is overwhelmed by Cam’s wealth and attention, but she soon discovers his violent and nasty side. When she cheats on him and tries to escape with drug money, it’s only a matter of time before events take a tragic turn. The story ends with an author’s note begging readers to make positive changes in their lives. Despite the blatant moralizing, this book is one of the better written and more appealing titles on the list, with a strong and sympathetic central character. Williams has also written a sequel, Grimey (Triple Crown Publications, 2004).

LEAP (Leadership Empowerment Achievement Program) is designed to:

*identify potential leaders within the library system,

*allow employees interested in advancement an opportunity to enhance their leadership skills, and

*develop a pool of individuals who can assume leadership roles when the need arises.

The objectives for participants in LEAP are:

*develop visionary leadership through practical hands-on experience and classroom training sessions;

*develop awareness of external and internal social and political influences impacting the library system, resulting in effective communication strategies for disseminating information;

*develop proactive strategies to address a shifting workplace environment; and

*gain an understanding of the overall operation of the library system and how each part works together to support the organization’s mission.

The following is a list of just some of the “soft skills” or “transferable skills” identified by the Leadership Development Steering Committee as shaping future Memphis Public Library leaders. Individual LEAP sessions were designed based on these competencies; each session addresses one or more of these skills:

*identifying and appreciating various leadership styles

*effective communication

*motivating followers and teambuilding

*ethical leadership

*valuing professional organizations

*advocacy and outreach

*strategic planning

*dealing with change

*coaching and mentoring

*community awareness

*public relations

*political acumen or savvy

*building collaborative relationships

*creating and communicating vision

*understanding the library "big picture"

*identifying future trends

Given: Poems by Wendell Berry

Cdrocan: +category

Readers of '''Hannah Coulter''' by Wendell Berry will remember that the author has many concerns about the way we live our lives and about the impact of our actions on the people we love and the earth that supports us. He questions whether the commonly accepted idea of progress, the proliferation of machines, pavement, noise, and crowding, is really a worthy goal for us. In the course of the story, he shows his readers a better way, people living thoughtful lives, caring for the world around them.

Many of the same concerns appear in the poems in his new collection '''Given'''. Many of the poems focus on the forest, the river, the soil, and the people that he knows well. Not all of these people are strictly real, as several of the poems and the short play in verse “Sonata at Payne Hollow” focus on characters from the world of his novels and short stories. Berry poses that people who care for the land on which they live are happier and more satisfied. There is gentleness in much of this verse, like in the following untitled work:

''This is the time you'd like to stay.''
''Not a leaf stirs. Not a sound.''
''The fireflies lift light from the ground.''

Berry does at times raise his voice in forthright criticism of current society. In his poem “Some Further Words,” he begins “Let me be plain with you, dear reader,” and continues with frank discussion of politics, science, and economics. His emotions peak in the following verse:

''When I hear the Stock Market has fallen''
''I say, “Long live gravity, long live''
''stupidity, error, and greed in the palaces''
''of fantasy capitalism.” I think''
''an economy should be based on thrift,''
''on taking care of things, not on theft,''
''usury, seduction, waste, and ruin.''

"Part IV: Sabbaths 1998-2004" is the largest and final section of the collection. These poems written on Sunday morning walks continue a series begun in previous collections, and they often deal on the surface with what Berry sees in the changing seasons. With them, he also expresses his Christian beliefs, as in the third poem in the subsection for 2000:

''As timely as a river''
''God’s timeless life passes''
''Into this world. It passes''
''Through bodies, giving life,''
''And past them, giving death.''

The collection can be read quickly, but I recommend taking a few poems at a time. Some readers will find many quotes to collect and keep. Given belongs in most public libraries.

= Definition =
A brand is defined by the American Marketing Association (AMA)as a "name, term, sign, symbol or design, or a combination of them intended to identify the goods and services of one seller or group of sellers and to differentiate them from those of other sellers."
Branding is used to communicate the unique market 'position' of one product from another in the eyes of the target customer group, with the intention of increasing 'market share'. It does this by firstly establishing what service values or features sets the product apart from the competition, and then communicating this difference, through promotional material, logos, staff values and so on. Using the example of a library, it may look to communicate the message of quality information identified by helpful, skilled staff - possibly in a dedicated 'place of learning' - against a backdrop of end user searches which could be frustrating in the face of 'information overload'.

Changes in the technological environment, with the advent of web 2.0, provides both an opportunity and threat to the library sector. Being part of the change, advocating and adopting new ways of working, can strengthen the library brand to one which is cutting edge - at the forefront of the new. Conversely, resistance to changes could result in the library brand being identified with an outdated product - resulting in reduced usage.

A discussion on book displays (complete with photographs) began on 17 May 2006 at webjunction. Tips are included for acquiring inexpensive props to draw attention to the display.
http://www.webjunction.org/forums/click.jspa?searchID=7311&messageID=29400
I don't have a photo but one of my most successful displays had a poster that said "I don't remember the title, but the cover was red". I set up the display with the poster and as many "red" fiction titles that the table would hold. The books flew off the table and the display had to be replenished daily!
